Diekirch celebrates contemporary Chinese art

This August, the Musée d’Histoire[s] Diekirch is hosting an exceptional exhibition celebrating contemporary Chinese art. Titled Modern Expressions: Chinese Contemporary Art in the spotlight, the exhibition, organised by curator Xun Yan in collaboration with Xun Art Gallery, unveils works by five major Chinese artists, offering a fascinating immersion in China’s contemporary art scene.

Among the artists featured in the exhibition is Fang Lijun, an emblematic figure of the Cynical Realism movement. Since the 1990s, he has challenged traditional artistic conventions by exploring themes linked to individualism, social tensions and personal introspection. His work 2025’s Spring, a 60×50 cm oil on canvas, embodies his expressive and profound style, combining psychological narrative with bold composition.

Also featured in the exhibition, Wu Jun is known for his innovative approach to visual art. His work is based on layered textures and collage techniques incorporating elements such as newspaper strips. His portraits explore notions of identity, memory and the evolution of Chinese culture in the digital age.

Alongside Fang Lijun and Wu Jun, the exhibition will also feature works by Qi Zhilong, Wang Weiran and Chen Kunlun, each bringing a unique vision to the event.

Art lovers will be able to discover these creations at the opening on 1 August at 6.30pm, in the presence of Wu Jun, who will share his artistic journey and inspirations. The exhibition runs from 2 to 31 August and is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, with free admission.
